1. Get your car somewhere safe

- On a residential street: pull in to the kerb where you’re not blocking a junction, bus stop or driveway.
- On a busy main road or red route: try to reach a side road, lay-by or car park if the car will still move safely.
- On a motorway: leave at the next exit or pull onto the hard shoulder or an emergency area. On a smart motorway without a hard shoulder, use an emergency area if you can reach one.

2. Put safety before the car
Once stopped, turn your wheels towards the kerb and put the handbrake on. Wear a high-visibility vest if you have one.
